About AMSANT

The Aboriginal Medical Service Alliance of the Northern Territory (AMSANT) is the peak body for Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services in the NT.  Aboriginal community control has its origins in Aboriginal people’s right to self-determination.  This is the right to be involved in health service delivery and decision-making according to the protocols or procedures determined by Aboriginal communities based on the Aboriginal definition of health:

 

‘not just the physical well-being of an individual but... the social, emotional and cultural wellbeing of the whole Community in which each individual is able to achieve their full potential as a human being thereby bringing about the total wellbeing of their Community.  It is a whole of life view and includes the cyclical concept of life-death-life’.

 

AMSANT places a strong focus on a culturally responsive trauma informed care approach to the delivery of services and a collaborative working culture to achieve the best possible outcomes.

 

AMSANT Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) programs are incorporated into the work of the SEWB team and includes support for services focused on culturally responsive trauma informed practice, suicide prevention and post-vention, workforce development, research and policy. 

 

Role Description

The position provides leadership, management, and strategic direction of the SEWB unit and its programs and services. As well as managing key stakeholder relationships for AMSANT, in support of the Aboriginal community-controlled health services (ACCHSs) sector in the NT.

 

Responsibilities

  1. Oversee the planning, design, implementation and monitoring of SEWB programs and services within parameters of grant funding, performance indicators and internal policies.
  2. Collaborate with AMSANT’s finance, corporate and human resources to effectively manage the resources, program budgets, funding guidelines, contractual obligations and staffing within the SEWB unit.
  3. Develop and communicate clear guidelines, plans and performance standards to staff regarding the delivery of high-quality programs and services, while consistently monitoring outcomes.
  4. Provide leadership and performance management of all SEWB staff, including addressing performance management issues and oversee the recruitment, selection, and onboarding of staff.
  5. Build and maintain relationships with AMSANT member services, external partners, and stakeholders to promote and enhance SEWB-related advocacy outcomes for AMSANT and our sector.
  6. Prepare high-level submissions, reports and documents that advance or advocate for SEWB-related objectives, including statistical data analysis.  
  7. Monitor, identify and assess potential risks to determine mitigation strategies to be implemented or escalation.
  8. Contribute as a member of the AMSANT Senior Management Team (SMT) to overseeing strategic planning, organisational policies, and WH&S practices.
  9. Promote the social, emotional and wellbeing framework and its application in our sector, along with ensuring SEWB programs and services are culturally responsive and safe.

 

Selection Requirements (Qualifications & Attributes)

 

ESSENTIAL

  1. Proven leadership and management skills in project management, including planning, development, analysis, and evaluation as well as financial administration.
  2. Demonstrated ability to lead teams including Indigenous people and people from diverse backgrounds.
  3. Demonstrated experience or knowledge in comprehensive primary health care, Aboriginal worldviews associated with social, emotional and cultural wellbeing, and the cultural and social determinants of health.  
  4. Possess highly developed skills in oral and written communication, strategic and analytical thinking.
  5. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain productive and collaborative relationships and partnerships across diverse stakeholders.
  6. Experience or ability to quickly develop skills in the manipulation of multiple reporting datasets, analysing and interpreting raw data with an emphasis on accuracy, auditing, and integrity.
  7. Well-developed time management skills, attention to detail, displaying personal motivation, initiative, and enthusiasm to manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines, while maintaining quality standards.
  8. Demonstrated high level of personal resilience and ability to manage challenging situations, competing demands and solve problems. 
  9. Ability to engage effectively and respectfully with Indigenous people and people from diverse backgrounds.

 

DESIRABLE

  1. Experience working in an Aboriginal controlled organisation.
  2. Knowledge of culturally responsive trauma-informed care practice.
