Role Description

You will be creating meaningful, culturally relevant tobacco (and vaping) content on social media platforms, usually based on content filmed in Top End Aboriginal communities.  You will be working closely with community-based Tackling Indigenous Smoking workers. You will also be monitoring the reach and engagement of these social media posts and the campaign, to continuously improve their impact.

You will be using social media and other marketing to reduce smoking and the harms it causes in remote Aboriginal communities in the Top End.  An estimated 51% of people in these communities smoke daily, but improvements are possible, and are already happening.  More than 90% of people in these communities speak an Aboriginal language at home, with the commonest languages being Murrin Patha, Tiwi, Kunwinjku and Burrarra.

AMSANT has received Commonwealth funding to host the Top End Tackling Indigenous Smoking team, in partnership with Mala’la, Red Lily, NT Health and Menzies School of Health Research, until June 2026.  The team will operate from Maningrida to Wadeye, including the Tiwi Islands but not Darwin.

You will be employed by AMSANT and be working closely with our partner organisations in the Top End Tackling Indigenous Smoking team.  You will be supported by the Public Health Medical Officer (tobacco) who is seconded from Menzies School of Health Research.  The position will involve travel to Top End remote Aboriginal communities.
