The filling of the SEWB Northern Australia Suicide Prevention Coordinator position is intended to constitute a special/equal opportunity measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth), and s 57 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1996 (NT). The SEWB Northern Australia Suicide Prevention Coordinator position is therefore only open to Aboriginal applicants.
Role Description:
The position works collaboratively with ACCHSs across northern Australia to strengthen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander suicide prevention and social and emotional wellbeing workforce to build the suicide prevention capacity of the community they service. This is done by coordinating the development and delivery of high-quality, culturally safe, and evidence-based suicide prevention education and training projects.
Responsibilities:
- Work in collaboration with the AMSANT SEWB team, including the Culture Care Connect Jurisdictional Coordinator, to expand SEWB suicide prevention approaches across northern Australia.
- Work collaboratively with elders, cultural authorities, and people with lived experience to draw upon cultural knowledge in a way that supports effective local governance and planning, maintains safety, respects cultural protocols, and is trauma-informed.
- Coordinate with jurisdictional peaks and ACCHSs, key staff, and community elders to create a northern Australia suicide prevention package that enables local governance and implementation.
- Work collaboratively with the northern Australia ACCHSs to support and develop a growing network of SEWB suicide prevention trainers and educators, including by establishing and maintaining communities of practice; and identifying cross-jurisdictional and individual opportunities for personal and professional growth.
- Strategically support the development and implementation of SEWB suicide prevention plans through building and maintaining effective relationships with AMSANT Members, Suicide Prevention Networks, and other stakeholders with a role to play in supporting communities and the workforce.
- Identify and seek new funding opportunities and work with the SEWB Manager to administer existing contracts including compliance, budget oversight and reporting.
- Provide expertise and advice on emerging issues and strategic opportunities that benefit enhancing SEWB within the ACCHS sector by undertaking sector engagement to inform external engagement on committees and working groups; data collection and analysis; and preparation of project plans, board papers and other high quality documents.
- Undertake other tasks as directed by SEWB Manager.
Selection Requirements (Qualifications & Attributes)
ESSENTIAL
- Work experience and/or qualifications in one of the following (or related) disciplines – social and emotional wellbeing, mental health, psychology, social work, alcohol and other drugs, or counselling.
- Proven ability as program coordinator or equivalent role, including previous experience in project planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation; and preparing program compliance reports.
- Demonstrated appropriate interpersonal, communication and organisational skills, including the ability to engage with a range of health services, management, health professionals, elders, and community members.
- Possess knowledge of Aboriginal cultures, and histories and an understanding of the impact of colonisation and how it relates to current social, emotional and health issues for Aboriginal communities, families and individuals.
- Demonstrated ability or knowledge to practice in culturally safe and trauma-informed ways, including a strong understanding of the issues surrounding suicide, grief and loss for Aboriginal people and the capacity to appropriately represent these issues in public forums.
- Knowledge and proven ability to use the Microsoft Office suite of products including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and Sharepoint.
DESIRABLE
- Experience working in an Aboriginal-controlled organisation.
- Cert IV in Training and Assessment or Community Development
