AMSANT is the peak body for Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services in the Northern Territory and advocates for equity in health, focusing on supporting the provision of high quality comprehensive primary health care services for Aboriginal communities.

 

AMSANT Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) programs are incorporated into the work of the SEWB team and includes support for services focused on culturally responsive trauma informed practice, suicide prevention and post-vention, workforce development, research and policy.

Contract duration: Fixed term to 30 June 2026, with possibility to extend depending on funding.

Work hours: Full-Time, Monday-Friday 08:00am - 04:30pm

The filling of the SEWB Postvention Member Support Coordinator position is intended to constitute a special/equal opportunity measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth), and s 57 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1996 (NT). The SEWB Postvention Member Support Coordinator position is therefore only open to Aboriginal applicants.

 

Role Description: 

The position will work closely with the relevant AMSANT member services, the SEWB Team and relevant key stakeholders to coordinate postvention support after a death by suicide. The position will primarily focus on working in collaboration with AMSANT member services to access bereavement support services where required and work to enhance understanding and service linkages for individuals, families and communities bereaved and/or impacted by suicide.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the SEWB Team and StandBy NT to coordinate delivery of postvention supports and capacity-building activities in the Northern Territory, primarily focusing on communities that AMSANT members work within.
  • Work in collaboration with AMSANT member services and key stakeholders to identify the needs of individuals, families and communities bereaved and/or impacted by suicide. This will include developing community engagement tools and culturally appropriate resources.
  • Coordinate the provision of a range of culturally appropriate community engagement and education activities, including workshops with AMSANT members and relevant stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate knowledge and skills through cultural expertise input, feedback mechanisms and continuous improvement initiatives with relevant services and practitioners involved in supporting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Maintain program documentation and client confidentiality in accordance with AMSANT policy and procedures. This includes administrative tasks of record keeping, reporting, and database entry.
  • Apply thoughtful and ethical decision-making to work within AMSANT’s operational boundaries, policies, and procedures.
  • Follow debriefing and supervision requirements and manage personal self-care in accordance with AMSANT policy and procedures.

 

Selection Requirements (Qualifications & Attributes)

 

ESSENTIAL

  • Work experience and/or qualifications in one of the following (or related) disciplines – social and emotional wellbeing, mental health, psychology, social work, alcohol and other drugs, or counselling
  • Possess an understanding of factors that contribute to and the impact of suicide on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples across the Northern Territory.
  • Strong communication skills with a good understanding of trauma-informed practice and engaging sensitively and appropriately with individuals, groups and communities bereaved and/or impacted through suicide and/or grief, loss, and trauma.
  • Possess knowledge of Aboriginal cultures, and histories and an understanding of the impact of colonisation and how it relates to current social, emotional and health issues for Aboriginal communities, families and individuals.
  • Demonstrated appropriate interpersonal, communication and organisational skills, including the experience in taking a leading role in meetings, committees, forums and projects with external stakeholders and internal staff.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander social and emotional well-being and healing frameworks.
  • Knowledge and proven ability to use the Microsoft Office suite of products including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and Sharepoint.
  • Ability to travel to remote locations by plane or vehicle on a regular basis.

 

DESIRABLE

  • Experience working in an Aboriginal-controlled organisation.
  • Have completed or are willing to undertake Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).
